Jimmy Starkey

starkeyJimmy Starkey, 57, of Walker died Friday Dec. 7, 2012 at his home.

He was born Jan. 17, 1955 in Minden to the late Richard Calvin and Nora Lee Starkey.

He graduated from Minden High School in 1973 and attended college at Baylor University. He then founded Bayou Ambulance Service, Inc. in 1979 along with Ruthy Starkey, Nancy Thomason and the late Paul Thomason, which they operated for more than 20 years.

During that time, he joined the Minden Fire Department as a volunteer fireman and rescue diver, earned his private pilot's license, served as a deacon for First Baptist Church and was elected to the Minden City Council where he served for eight years.

He continued his education at Grambling State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He would continue to serve the community as an investigator for the Webster Parish Coroner and a reserve deputy and Correctional Facility Nurse at the Webster Parish Penal Farm. In addition to Bayou Ambulance, he was employed as a nurse at many area hospitals. He later found his calling as a director of nursing in area nursing and rehabilitation homes.

These opportunities led him to his current position of Director of Nursing for Capitol House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baton Rouge.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his grandparents, James Louis and Claire May King of Minden and Harold J. and Myrtle Starkey of Conneaut, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife, Shelly Starkey of Walker; children, Bear Starkey and fiancé Kristen Moak, Josh and wife, Lindsey Starkey and Chelsea Starkey and fiancée, Shawn Henderson all of Minden; brother, Jerry and wife, Phyllis Starkey of Monticello, Arkansas along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. today (Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Seale Funeral Home in Denham Springs.

Funeral and burial services will be held there, as well, on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at 2 p.m.

The family will be holding a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Friday Dec. 14, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Minden with Rev. Don McCormick officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests potluck meals for the fellowship gathering after the memorial service in the Emmanuel Baptist Fellowship Hall.
