Lady Tiders fall to Benton

The Minden High Lady Tiders dropped to 2-3 in District 1-4A and 14-11 overall with a 52-42 loss to Benton High School Friday night.

"Overall, I'm really pleased with how our girls played," Lady Tiders head coach Jacob Brown said. "We just had some areas that cost us. We got into a hole early, and we missed too many free throws. But the girls showed a lot of character and never quit playing."

Benton jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead over the Lady Tiders and then led 27-16 at the half. The Lady Tiders took the third quarter, 10-8, and the two teams played almost even (17-16) in the fourth to make the final, 52-42.

"I thought our girls did a good job against Benton's zone early in the game," Brown said. "But they went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter that was mostly built off our turnovers. We missed several opportunities during that time."

It was more of the same in the second quarter for the Lady Tiders.

"We more or less traded baskets with them for most of the second quarter," Brown said. "We were down 25-16 with about 35 or 40 seconds left, and we were going to hold it for the last shot. But we werent' very patient and missed a lay-up with 20 seconds left. Benton got the rebound and went down and made the shot to put us down, 27-16, at the half."

Brown challenged the team at halftime.

"We challenged them to play tougher on defense," he said. "We had played solid on defense, but we had too many fouls and sent them to the line. We talked about defending the ball hard and not allowing second chances."

Brown thought his team played much better offensively in the second half.

"We came out in the second half and handled their pressure much better," he said. "We cut out turnovers in half (14-7) from the first half, and that led us to do a better job scoring. We picked up our play in the third quarter and made much better decisions on offense. We played aggressive the rest of the way and despite a few turnovers I thought we played well."

Metosha Gill led the Lady Tiders with 12 points and JaCourtney Neloms added 10. Tiaga Pugh scored eight points and Tyneshia Harris scored six. Tyia Green added four points and Cha'Raia Hill had two.
