James S. Leathers

James_Leathers750James Samuel ("Jim") Leathers, of Minden, went to eternal life with his Lord on Dec. 13, 2012, at 1:23 a.m., after a battle with colon cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold O. and Kathryn F. (Baird) Leathers of Milesburg, Pennsylvania.

Memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Minden.

Jim was a native of Milesburg and a member of the Bellefonte High School Class of 1953. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1982, and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. He enjoyed a second career as a Training Manager at the Louisiana and Longhorn Army Ammunition Plants off and on from 1988 through 2005. He had a special love for animals, rescuing many dogs, cats, and horses over his lifetime – a tradition that his daughters carry on, along with his great sense of humor and love of the great outdoors. He was a wonderful dancer, loved classic country music, and passed on his ability to quote any book, poem and movie to his daughters and grandchildren.

Jim was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had 19 years sobriety. Our family would particularly like to thank everyone at the Alpha Club in Minden for the support you gave Jim, and to say, as he would have: "Keep Coming Back." He rededicated his life to Christ at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Minden, and we thank everyone there for loving and supporting Jim.

Jim was beloved by his family: wife, Mary K. (Kathy) Leathers; sister, Mary Leathers Bressler of Milesburg; and nephew, Mark; daughter, Cynthia Leathers and husband, Judd Hollander of New York City; daughter, Kathleen Phillips and husband, Terry, of Greensboro, North Carolina and their children, Katie Wilmoth, husband, Thomas and their children, Lila Kate and Max James and Kristen Phillips; stepdaughter, Kimberly Garcia and husband, Allen of Bossier City and their children, Andrew Chamberlain, his wife, Paige and son Anderson; children, Christina, Krystle and her daughter, Addison, Maggie and Joseph; stepdaughter, Leslie Forns and husband, Jose of Forney, Texas and their children, Adam and Leah; stepdaughter, Kelly Perusse, husband, Greg and their children, Rachel Sanders and husband, Matt, Deana Waddell and husband, Clynt and their children, Corbin and Garret.

A very special thank you to Dr. Joyce Feagin, Dr. Michael Dursi and the entire team at Willis Knighton Cancer Center of Shreveport, especially the kind staff of the Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit and the hospice care he received at home from his nurses and at Willow Ridge in Arcadia. Jim raved about the special care he received from all of you.
