DAR announces essay winners

DAR098

Dorcheat-Bistineau Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently held its annual essay contest. Fifty-five area students from grades 5-8 participated. The assigned topic of the essay was "forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence."

Winners of the 2012 DAR Essay Contest were honored at the January DAR meeting held at St. John's Episcopal Church Youth Building. Members enjoyed hearing the students read their outstanding essays.

Skylar Davis of Heflin was named the 5th grade winner. She is a student at Glenbrook and wrote her essay on Hercules Mulligan who was an Irishman, a tailor and someone George Washington owed his life to.

Winner at the 6th grade level was Zachary McIntyre, a student at J.A. Phillips Middle School. Zachary chose to write about Lydia Darragh, a Quaker housewife who crossed British lines into Philadelphia delivering information to George Washington warning him of pending British attacks.

Parker Christy, 7th grade winner and Glenbrook student, wrote about Lyman Hall. Hall was a rice farmer, pastor, doctor and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Following the American Revolution, Hall served as governor of Georgia and his efforts led to the chartering of the University of Georgia in 1785.

The 8th grade winner was Glenbrook student Jenni Nguyen. Jenni wrote her essay on Molly Pitcher who served an important role during the American Revolution. Pitcher joined a group of women known as Camp Followers who delivered food and cared for the sick and dying soldiers.

The DAR would like to thank parents and grandparents for their support and attending the meeting. Also, a huge "thank you" to area teachers for their support, encouragement and for all owing the students to participate in such a worthwhile project- learning about the history of American Patriots who fought and died for our country.
