An advertisement for bids has been announced in preparation for the visitor center at Germantown Colony Museum.

"Everyone is excited to finally be at this point," said Lynn Dorsey, Executive Director of Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau. "I am happy to report that because of support from businesses like Petro Chem and Claiborne Electric, we are anticipating having bids that fit our budget."

Construction for the climate controlled visitors center will begin in mid to late April.

It will house artifacts of the Germantown Colony, so they may be preserved for future generations.

"I am excited to announce that the Secretary of State is hiring Larry Milford," Lynn said. "They chose him after seeing his professional design of interiors of the new building.

"As we all know, Larry has done an outstanding job at the Dorcheat Museum," she continued. "He will be able to design exhibits telling the story of Germantown, as no one else could."

Dorsey and Milford traveled to Baton Rouge to go through artifacts in storage at the state archives.

"We wanted to get an idea of what Larry had to work with for the exhibits," Dorsey said. "He was quite amazed with what he saw."

Many things captured Milford's attention, and he said he could not wait to get started putting his ideas to work.

"There are seals – four different ones – the type for putting an image in wax," Milford said. "We are excited about this because we have been searching for an image or an icon – something to represent Germantown, and here are four."

Milford said many other amazing things will be exhibited in the museum included a flint rifle, Spanish coins, half-cent coins and confederacy coins, gold rimmed glasses, ivory crucifix and more.

"These items and the history of Germantown are really something history lovers are going to enjoy," he said. "I'm looking forward to building an exhibit that gets the attention of everyone – from children to adults."
