Mrs. Bertha Mae Sims Harris was born August 21, 1934 in Simsboro, the fifth of seven children born to Deacon Harvey and Hattie Green Sims.
She united in holy matrimony to Odell Harris, Sr. on Dec. 31, 1949. To this union, five children were born.
Bertha Harris was a faithful member of New Light Baptist Church until her health began to fail her. Even though, she was not able to attend church, she loved and supported her church.
She was employed at Meadowview Nursing Home for forty-two years and retired in 2007. She loved taking care of the elderly.
God called her home at her residence on Thursday, January 31.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey Sims, Sr. and Hattie Green Sims; her husband, Odell Harris, Sr.; three brothers, Fred Sims, R. J. Sims and Charles Sims; one sister, Mary Sims Baker; two sons, Odell Harris, Jr. and Larry Harris; and a granddaughter, Tomeka Roberts.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Patricia Clark (Rev. Emmitt, Jr.) of Minden and Sonia Johnson (Jesse) of Haughton; one son, Eric Harris (Laydesh) of Nashville, Tenneessee; 13 grandchildren, Shawn Harris, Aubrey Harris, Yolanda Harris, Jeff Harris, Jason Harris, Keith Smith, Monica Green (Keith), Mikell Harris, Larry Harris, Jr., Jade Harris, Marques Clark, Greg Chevalier and LaKishia Harris; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Ardis Sims (Elnora) of Los Angeles, California, Rev. Harvey Sims, Jr.(Helen) of Compton, California and James Sims (Alma Jean) of Clinton, Maryland; one aunt, Nobie Scott of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters-in-law, Janice Harris of Houston, Texas and Sheryl Harris of Minden; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the chapel of Kennon's Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 9, at noon at New Light Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Alstork, officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
