Small town hospitality blooms

Think you know your Jonquils? Find out Saturday, March 3 when the Daffodil Capital of Louisiana hosts the 2012 Jonquil Jubilee Home and Garden Tour in Gibsland.

Hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. with the Jonquil Jubilee Pancake Breakfast for $5 starting at 8 a.m.

With a $10 Jonquil Tour ticket, you will receive a map and directions to multiple attractions. Begin at any location and travel at your own pace. Gibsland is located one mile south of I-20 at the Gibsland/Athens Exit (#61), 45 miles east of Shreveport and 56 miles west of Monroe.

Homes on this year's tour include the following.

1.) The Colbert Place, owned by Charlie and Marsha Andrews, was built in the 1860s and features a wide banister veranda and six hand hewn octagonal columns. Tour the home and shop vendors at the location.

2.) The second home is owned by J.R. Johnson and his wife, Jan McLeish Johnson. They invite you to visit "Cedar Ridge," a Cajun-style cabin built in 2006 on the Johnson's original home place. With its whimsical, as well as eclectic décor, it will surely capture your heart.

Additional tour sites include:

Two L&NW locomotive train engines in downtown Gibsland.

First Baptist Church which will include beautiful handmade quilts.

Oak Grove Farm, home of Joyce Lilly, where fields of bulbs have been planted for generations.

The Carter Farm, the home of Lorris & Elaine Carter with its fields of Jonquils and a model car exhibition.

The Blacksmith Shop, owned by Russell & Sue Kettler which will include live blacksmithing demonstrations.

Stagecoach Inn, established in 1847 which will feature historians describing the history and importance of the house & family during Stagecoach days.

Other stops include:

The oldest continuously operated Baptist Church in Louisiana, Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church est. in 1837; and Mt. Lebanon Stagecoach Trail Museum.

Drive By:

Sutton's Red Barn, with its daffodils, is a picturesque Red Barn, built in 1927 and has been an area landmark for decades.

Sally's Field, a display featuring more than 6,000 daffodils.

The Downtown Area features:

Shopping, including the E.W. Merritt Pavilion, with vendors featuring hand- crafted items such as ironworks and original art plus a large assortment of plants and garden accessories.

Food, including wonderful country cooking from the Gibsland Grill and Louisiana barbeque at Key Rail Barbeque.

The Burkhalter Gazebo, which highlights a wide variety of gorgeous daffodils.
