Glenbrook Softball Gaining Experience

The Glenbrook Lady Apache softball team is roaring through summer competition in anticipation of the district race looming on the horizon.

The team played in the Riverfield Tournament over the weekend, winning a few and losing a few, but gaining something even more valuable than wins and losses at this point in the season – valuable experience.

"All three teams we played in the tournament were Double A teams," coach Jonathon Hardy said. "That will help us when we get into district against other Single A teams."

One of those Double A teams was Prarieview, a team that Hardy says will go very far in the playoffs.

The Apaches played PV Academy twice and fell both times.

"Prarieview is a very strong team," he said. "Look for them in the Double A playoffs. Going against them and doing well helped our girls get experience and gain confidence. That is going to help us down the road."

In the first game against Prarieview, Glenbrook lost 10-4, scoring all four runs in the final inning. While being down 10-0 may seem like a humbling experience, Hardy was proud because his team did not quit.

"Instead we did not give up," he said. "We didn't give in and kept playing hard and scored four runs in the last inning."

The next game against Prairieview was a much different story. The Lady Apaches did indeed lose, but the final score was 7-5.

It took a late Prarieview homerun to break a 5-5 tie.

"We played a lot better defensively this time against them," Hardy said. "We battled and were able to do a better job at the plate."

There were other bright spots from the weekend games including a 9-5 victory against River Oaks.

"We hit the ball really well," Hardy said. "The bats came alive and we really had a very complete game."

Good performances were turned in all weekend long by the likes of Rayla Hardaway, Shelby Nicholas, Macie Branch, Katy Kidd, Melanie Hansen, Jessica Mangrum and Carson Spurlock.

Next up for the Lady Apaches is a Thursday evening game at River Oaks. Game time is 6:30. This weekend, the team will participate in a pre-district tournament in Alexandria.

Hardy said all the district teams were expected to participate.
