Knights begin Class 2A playoffs on the road
The North Webster Knights will travel to Kinder tonight to take on the Kinder Yellow Jackets in a first-round LHSAA Class 2A playoff game.
Kinder comes into the game with an 8-2 record and as 2A's 16-seed team. North Webster is 6-4 and seeded 17th.
The Yellow Jackets feature a high-scoring offense that has scored an average of 38 points in their eight wins. Kinder runs the triple option and are led by running back Marshall Harmon. Harmon rushed for 2,470 yards and 35 touchdowns last year, and has been almost as good this year. Harmon scored three touchdowns in Kinder's 42-0 win over Lake Arthur last week. Wanterio Frank is also a big-play threat out of the back field, as his 69-yard touchdown last week will attest.
The Yellow Jackets also play tough defense, as they allowed a total of just 99 points (9.9 ppg) this season. They have shut out three opponents this season including the last two in a row.
Kinder sophomore middle linebacker Bryce Baker recorded a team and season high 23 tackles last week, including 13 solos and Isaac Luce added 13 tackles. Kinder also snagged two interceptions by Garrett Duddleston and D.C. Arceneaux.
The Knights will rely on their Wing-T offense led quarterback J.O. Smith and running back Devin White.
Last week against BTW, White led the Knights with 224 yards and two touchdowns, while Smith added 146 yards and two scores. For the season, Smith leads North Webster with 1,104 yards and 15 touchdowns, and White has totaled 716 yards and eight scores. Lyntravious Gibson (339 yards two touchdowns) and Ryan Hawthorne (303 yards and five touchdowns) also provide a punch on offense.
The winner of this game will have a tough second round game, as they will play the winner of the #1 seed John Curtis and Pope John Paul High School.
Game time is 7 p.m.
