Crack in ‘free’ zone nets one

Roosevelt_JohnsonCrossing a school campus with cocaine in your pocket will get you in trouble with the law, as one Minden man learned recently.

Roosevelt Johnson, Jr., 45, of the 600 block of Woods Street, was arrested January 25 for possession of CDS Sch. II, possession of CDS in a drug-free zone, disturbing the peace (intoxicated), trespassing and as a fugitive from the Webster Parish Sheriff's Office.

Minden Police Chief Steve Cropper said Officer 1st Class Joel Kendrick was working stationary traffic on Talton Street late in the evening.

"Officer Kendrick observed a black male walking toward J.A. Phillips School," Cropper said. "He approached the man to ask him why he was on school property that late at night."

When Kendrick approached, he reportedly detected an odor of alcohol about the man.

"The officer identified him as Johnson," said the chief. "Johnson's eyes were blood shot, he appeared to be intoxicated and became argumentative when the officer tried to talk to him."

A warrant check reportedly showed Johnson was wanted by the Webster Parish Sheriff's Office. Cropper said WPSO was notified and sent a deputy to collect Johnson, who was handcuffed by Minden Police.

"When the deputy arrived to pick him up, they were transferring Johnson from Kendrick's handcuffs to the deputy's cuffs, and when they did, they conducted a more thorough search," Cropper said. "Inside Johnson's pocket they found a small piece of paper with a powder-like substance inside. It field tested positive for crack cocaine."

According to the chief, Johnson was then placed under arrest by Minden Police, booked at the police department and transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center with a hold placed by Webster Parish Sheriff's Office.
