Four more games scheduled for tonight at Lakeside
SIBLEY — The Doyline Tournament tipped off last night with four games and will continue today with four more.
Wednesday's games and today's games are all being played at Lakeside High School due to the Explo situation in Doyline. The decision on the location for Friday and Saturday games will be made later today.
Haughton 51, Lakeside 37
The game was close for the first half, before the Bucs broke it open in the third quarter.
"We didn't play as well as Haughton did," Lakeside head coach Jason Gould said. "The third quarter was the big key. We were only down one point at halftime, and they just killed us in the third quarter, out-scoring us 16-8."
Turnovers and missed opportunities at the free throw line doomed the Warriors.
"We turned the ball over too many times and only hit on six of 18 free throws," Gould said. "Missed free throws will change the whole tone of your game. And we just seemed to turn the ball over at the wrong time."
Frankie Miles led the Warriors with 10 points and added eight rebounds. Jamarion Teal led the team with 11 rebounds and added nine points, and Lance Taylor added seven points and four assists. Damian Whiting also added seven points.
"We're just so young and inexperienced," Gould said. "We can't play a complete game right now. We'll play well in spurts and look good, then we'll do something stupid. It's just a matter of getting them there, and we're getting better. It's just going to take some time."
Byrd 83, North Webster 72
The Byrd Yellow Jackets knocked out the North Webster Knights despite a game-high 29 points from the Knights' Montavious Smith.
Byrd led 17-10 at the end of the first quarter, but North Webster fought back and took the second quarter 32-19 to take a 42-36 halftime lead.
North Webster increased their lead to 61-50 going into the fourth quarter, but Byrd out-scored North Webster 33-11 in the final quarter to take the win.
In addition to Montavious Smith's 29 points, Dontavious Smith added 12 and Devin White scored 10. Lyntravious Gipson dropped in nine points and Willie Lee scored six. Darius Gilbert scored four and Alex Taylor had one.
Woodlawn 58, Simsboro 35
The Woodlawn ladies rolled past Simsboro to set up a meeting with the Doyline Lady Panthers on Friday.
Amber Cook led Woodlawn with 20 points and Rachel Elzie added 17, including five three-pointers.
Tia Mitchell led Simsboro with 14 points and Kim Walker had four points.
