Minden High beats Captain Shreve in Consolation Final
HAUGHTON—The Minden High Lady Tiders completed a good week at Haughton by beating Captain Shreve, 42-34 in the third place game.
"I thought we played well all week," Lady Tider head coach Jacob Brown said. "I thought throughout the tournament we had a number of girls step up and play well for us. We made a few line-up changes along the way and the team responded every time."
The Lady Tiders led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and 20-17 at the half.
"I thought we came out a little sluggish, but we were playing at 10 a.m. and it was actually our fourth game in five days," Brown said. "Slowly but surely we got going and it all started on defense."
The Lady Tiders relied on their defense until their offense got untracked in the third quarter.
"We really picked up our intensity in the third quarter," Brown said. "Our offense really came around in the third and we out-scored them 18-2 to take a 38-19 lead going into the fourth."
Captain Shreve out-scored Minden, 13-4 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Tiders held on for the win.
"We got a little sluggish again at the end," Brown said. "We just have to be more consistent like we had been in the three previous quarters."
Carmela Specks led the Lady Tiders with 11 points. She also had five steals and four rebounds. Antavious Sterling added nine points and four rebounds, and Metosha Gill had eight points and 10 rebounds. Shabrie Nelson dropped in six points and eight rebounds and Ja'Courtney Neloms added four points and four rebounds.
The Lady Tiders defeated Richwood 50-29 on Friday.
The Lady Tiders jumped out early, leading 11-7 at the end of the first quarter and 24-17 at the half.
"We came out early and took control of the game in a positive way," Brown said. "We were able to defend and get some offensive looks and get into transition. We were also able to execute our sets in the half court game, which was key."
Richwood supplied a heavy full court press, and the Lady Tiders found a way to defeat it.
"I thought we handled the full court pressure pretty well," Brown said. "And we got better as the game went on. I thought we did a good job adjusting to the different looks they gave us."
The Lady Tiders out-scored Richwood 11-9 in the third and 15-3 in the fourth quarter.
"I thought we played good defense all through the game," Brown said. "But we really picked it up in the second half. I can't say enough about our defensive effort. I was also pleased with the way we really took control of the game and we did that in our half court set. We really worked our offense, got good looks and then hit some free throws to seal the game."
Specks led the Lady Tiders with 16 points and Tyia Green added 10 points and three rebounds. Nelson scored six, Gill had five points and four rebounds and Sterling had four points and five rebounds. Neloms and Tianna Rogers both had four points and four rebounds.
