Church honors local artist

Members of a local church gathered recently to show appreciation to a former member who is keeping memories alive of her time there through her paintings.

Minden Presbyterian Church members hosted a covered dish lunch where they honored local folk artist Cora Lou Robinson following worship services Sunday.

"I grew up in the Presbyterian church and one of my most pleasant memories is Bible school," Robinson said in an earlier interview. "Most of it was held outside, and I never remember anyone complaining about being hot. We sang, did crafts, planted flowers, played and studied the Bible."

Robinson depicted her memories on canvas last fall in a painting of her childhood church – Minden Presbyteria. It helped raise funds for Dorcheat Historical Association Museum.

The painting was titled "Bible School – Presbyterian Church – 1940s," and Margaret Evans, a church member, was the high bidder.

"I will never forget the most wonderful Sunday school teacher I ever had," Robinson recalled. "She is Susie Lester and she is pictured at the refreshment table (in the painting). Those were very special times, and I will cherish those memories forever."

After the church presented Robinson with a crystal tray, she returned the favor by presenting Lester, with a framed print of the original painting.
