Cade Spurlock hits game winner with two seconds left

WINNSBORO — The Glenbrook basketball teams had to travel to Winnsboro Monday night for a pair of weather-related make-up games.

Both teams came out with wins, setting up some important district games this week.

Apaches 67, Cougars 65

"It was a huge district win for us," Apache head coach Todd Spurlock said. "It was a big win. We had some guys really step up. Cade (Spurlock) and Jalen (Patterson) hit some big shots and Regan (Edwards) had a big defensive game, he played an excellent game on their best player."

The Apaches trailed 19-9, after the first quarter, but battled back to tie the game at 30-30 by halftime.

"We started off kind of slow," Spurlock said. "Things weren't looking too good for us, but we battled back with some hot shooting by Jalen to tie it back up."

The Apaches played better in the second half, and the game came down to the final seconds.

"We were able to build a lead in the third quarter, but they came back on us," Spurlock said. "We were up, but they tied the score with a couple of free throws with 15 seconds left. We called a timeout, and then Cade got to the basket and hit the game winner for us."

The game appeared over, but the officials put two seconds back on the clock. Franklin's last-ditched effort missed its mark and the Apaches took the win.

"It was a really big win," Spurlock said. "Jalen hit some big shots in the first half, and Cade hit some in the second half. We have a big game Tuesday at Union Christian and then we host Franklin on Thursday. If we can get those two wins, we'll be looking good for the playoffs."

Patterson led the Apaches with 37 points and Cade Spurlock added 20.

Lady Apaches 51, Lady Cougars 25

"We knew we had to come in and win tonight to keep our playoff hopes alive," Lady Apache coach Rendi Dillard said. "And the girls played a good game."

Carsin Spurlock led the team with 22 points and Lauren Sims scored eight. Macie Branch dropped in seven points and Shelby Nicholas had five. Jessica Mangrum scored four, Kennedy Ayers and Catherine Willis each scored two Hannah Harris added one.

The Apaches and Lady Apaches will travel to Farmerville tonight for district games with Union Christian, and then will return to the Minden Rec Complex Thursday night for Senior Night as they host Franklin Academy.
