Crucifixion Roles

The Jewish expectation of the long awaited Christ, the Messiah, was that of a conquering hero. Jesus did not fit their picture; yet, when Caiaphas, the high priest, demanded "I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven" Matthew 26:63, 64. How could one who appeared to be under the power of others be the Son of God? He had no need to provide explanations.

It was only a bit later that Pilate questioned Him. "Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it" Mark 15:2. Said in today's language His reply would be "Yes, just as you said." Pilate was impressed enough to place the title on Jesus' cross.

It was in the role of Prophet that Jesus spoke to a group of sympathetic women. "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck" Luke 23:28, 29. The siege and fall of Jerusalem was in the not-too-distant future, and it would be a terrible experience.

As the Roman soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross, He spoke as priest and advocate, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do" Luke 23:34. Even in His time of awful trial, His concern was for others as He exercised His priestly role.

The first to accept Jesus as Savior because of the cross was the penitent thief. How gratifying it must have been to give him the assurance of eternal life. At a time that Jesus appeared to most as a defeated man, the forgiven thief recognized Him for who He was, the Savior of all!

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. As Prophet He has let us know what lies ahead so we won't despair. He is King of Kings but He allows us to decide if we'll be under His rule. We have the assurance that right now He intercedes for us as Priest and, praise the Lord, as Savior He is more than eager to save, those of us who are willing, from our sins that we might spend eternity with Him.
