Save lives, one donation at a time

Setting aside one hour of time could save up to three lives by donating blood. LifeShare Blood Center is holding three local blood drives in the next week and is in need of donations.

"I love Minden and this area," said Mary Jo Henderson, Donor Recruiter. "The whole community rallies around and helps if someone is in need."
Henderson is confident the community she has known and built relationships with for 16 years, will support the blood drive by donations.

As there is no substitute for human blood and the shelf-life of stored red blood cells is approximately 42 days, so the need for donations is on-going.

Henderson explains that blood helps an abundance of patients such as babies in utero (before birth).

Children being treated for cancer, premature infants and children having heart surgery need blood and platelets from donors.

One unit of blood can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells are needed for surgeries and trauma patients, while plasma is used for burn patients and cancer patients. Platelets promote blood clotting and give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live, according to americasblood.org. Cancer, transplant and trauma patients, and patients undergoing surgery may require platelet transfusions to survive.

Upcoming LifeShare Blood drives will be:

Saturday, March 23, at Camp Minden from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday, March 28, at the Minden Wal-Mart from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Saturday, March 30, at Hay's Grocery in Sibley from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

For more information, donors can visit www.lifeshare.org or call Mary Jo Henderson at 673-1485.

LifeShare Blood Centers regularly supplies blood components to 117 medical facilities throughout Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas. Founded in Shreveport in 1942, it is a nonprofit community service provider governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees.

An average adult has 10 pints of blood in their body and typically if someone needs blood during a surgery, at least three units of blood is transfused, however, a newborn baby has about a cup of blood in its body, according to online sources

About 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year.

Someone needs blood every two seconds.
