HAYNESVILLE— The Doyline Panthers improved to 4-2 with a 3-0 clean sweep through the Hayneville Round Robin Tournament over the weekend.
The Panthers beat Summerfield last Thursday and then went 2-0 over the weekend. They beat Bradley (Ark.) 11-3 on Friday and beat Haynesville in the second game.
Luke Watson started on the mound for the Panthers against Bradley and threw the first two innings. James Gaynor came on in relief and picked up his first win of the year (1-0).
Peyton Goerner led the team with three hits, two doubles and a single, and Gage Brunson doubled and singled. Zach Jordan added a pair of singles, and Robert Stephens had a double. Micheal Augustine and Luke Watson both added singles.
"I was proud because we came from behind this game," Doyline coach John Austin said. "We were behind 3-1 going into the fourth inning before we broke it open."
The Panthers then beat Haynesville, 7-0, in their next game.
"It was huge for us because they had already beat us last weekend 13-9 at Springhill," Austin said. "Zach Jordan (1-0) made his first ever start on the mound and he did excellent. He only walked one in seven innings of work and struck out seven. I can't say enough about how well he did for his first start against a good team. Our offense and defense helped him, too."
Goerner again led the offense, this time with a single, double and a triple. Augustine had a double and two singles, and Cole Lillig singled and doubled. Watson added three singles. Gage Brunson, James Gaynor, Zach Jordan, Garrett Smith and Kevin Bolen all added singles.
"It was a great weekend for us," Austin said. "I just hope we continue to find a way. We play Haynesville again on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Doyline. Should be a good game!"
