Minden Rec leagues facing coach shortage

Minden Rec leagues facing coach shortage

Thousands of boys and girls have taken part of the baseball and softball leagues at the Minden Recreation Complex since it's completion in 2006, and many thousands more participated in city leagues at other parks in Minden including Babb's park.

But now, some children may be turned away because a shortage of coaches.

Minden Recreation Department Director Winky Newer says he needs at least eight more coaches to support the number of kids signed up to play this year.

"We need one for boys' Dixie Youth," he said. "Two for AAA, two for AA and three ponytail coaches. We've signed up more than 500 kids in the last week."

The boys' Dixie Youth league is for boys ages 11 and 12. The AAA league is for ages nine and 10 and AA is for seven and eight year-olds. The girls' ponytail league is for girls 11 and 12 years-old.

"We've never had this much trouble getting coaches," Newer said. "We want every kid that signs up to get the opportunity to play. But without coaches, these programs can't continue to exists. Some people that coaching little league is a thankless job, but it really is rewarding."

If you would be interested in coaching one of these teams, call one of the numbers to the right or come to the tryouts Saturday at the Recreation Complex.

The Darlings, Belles, AA and Dixie Boys will tryout at 10 a.m. and the Angels, AAA, Ponytails and Dixie Youth leagues will hold tryouts at 11 a.m.
