Dorothy Moore Johns

JohnsDorothyDorothy Moore Johns passed away on Dec. 14, 2012 in Fort Worth, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 22, at First Presbyterian Church in Homer.

The family requests memorials to First Presbyterian Church, 618 North 2nd Street, Homer, Louisiana 71040 or to a charity of choice.

Dorothy, a retired teacher, was born in Fort Necessity on Nov. 20, 1923, and graduated from Louisiana Tech University with B.S. and M.S. degrees. Her first teaching position was in Baskin.

She met and married her husband, Dawson, in 1944, and their first home was in Calhoun. Dorothy and Dawson moved to Homer in 1947, where she remained until she moved to Fort Worth in 2006.

Twenty years after graduating, Dorothy returned to Louisiana Tech and studied math. She resumed her career teaching math at Haynesville High School and continued at Minden High School. She also served on the Louisiana Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities. She concluded her teaching career at Wade Correctional Facility where she helped inmates prepare for the math portion of the GED examination to obtain their high school equivalency degree.

After retirement, Dorothy maintained a keen interest in the studies of her grandchildren and former students, traveled and volunteered at Ford Museum and First Presbyterian Church in Homer.

Dorothy was a wonderful mother and wife and was a friend to many who have shared their warm and loving remembrances over the past few days.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the caring and loving staff at Broadway Plaza in Fort Worth who assisted in Dorothy's care during the last years of her life. A sincere thank you is also extended to her dear friends who helped her in the last few years she lived in Homer.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dawson and her brother, Harmon Moore.

Survivors include her son, Malcolm, wife, Risé and granddaughter, Mary Dawson of Houston, Texas; son, George, wife Missy and grandsons, Matthew and Michael of Fort Worth, Texas; siste,r Frances Price of Carrollton, Texas; brother, Harold A. Moore, M.D. and wife, Alice of Columbia, South Carolina; and nieces and nephews who had a special place in her life.
