Editor's Note: This column was written a week ago. Early voting has since ended.

Early voting for the Oct. 19 5th District congressional race got under way Saturday and will continue until the end of this week.

Judging by the number of people who bothered to vote Ouachita and Rapides parishes over the weekend, it shouldn't surprise anyone if turnout for the special election fails to reach the 25-percent mark that Secretary of State Tom Schedler predicted several weeks ago.
