SHREVEPORT (AP) — The Shreveport-Bossier City area has landed one of three Bassmaster Central Opens for 2013.
The Central Open season will launch on the Red River on April 25-27 with a berth in the 2014 Bassmaster Classic on the line. The BASS organization has been to the Red River 11 times, including holding the 2009 and 2012 Classics at the South Marina.
Elite pro Billy McCaghren won the last Open event held in Louisiana in 2008.
McCaghren's sack of 16 pounds and 6 ounces on the final day put him at 54 pounds and just ahead of Minden's Homer Humphreys (51-7) for the win. It is the first BASS win for the 36-year-old McCaghren.
There are nine Open events in three different divisions with each winner claiming a Classic berth if they fish in all three Opens in a division.
The second Central Open is slated for the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla., on Sept. 19-21. The final Central event will be on the Ross Barnett Reservoir in Jackson, Miss., on Oct. 17-19.
