This year's theme is 'One World, Many Stories' and the free program begins June 1.
"We are partnering with Barnes and Noble this year to help promote their Summer Reading Program as well," said Jennifer Heard, the Children's Coordinator for the Webster Parish Library. "There will be a representative here that day (June 1) to tell children about the program they are having this summer."
Also, Jeannine Pasini Beekman, a Louisiana Storyteller, will be at the library on June 1 at 10 a.m. to perform for the public. Jeannine has been featured in such prominent venues as the National Storytelling Festival, the Mark Taper Theatre and the Disney Institute. Her recording work has been recognized with two Parent's Choice Awards and is included in the Library of Congress International Storytelling Collection. All ages are welcome.
On June 16, Dianne de Las Casas will perform for the public at 10 a.m. Las Casas is a world famous storyteller and children's book author. She travels the globe each year performing for audiences of all ages. We are very lucky to have her come perform for us here in Webster Parish.
On July 27 the library will host another world famous storyteller, Angela Davis, who will also perform at 10 a.m. Davis is a member of the National Storytelling Association, Association of Black Storytellers and Young Audiences, Inc. of New Orleans. She is also listed on the Louisiana State Artist Roster.
The rest of the summer is filled with story times for younger children (ages 3-6) on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Art Attacks! will be held on Mondays (ages 7-9) at 1 p.m. and Fridays (ages 10-12) at 1 p.m. Critter Co. will be on hand on the 28 at 10 a.m. to show off animals from around the world for the Summer Reading Program ending party. All ages are welcome.
Children can sign up for the Summer Reading Program starting May 23. All programs are totally free of charge and the storytellers are being provided by a grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and Louisiana Division of the Arts.
"We encourage children to read during the summer for prizes," Heard said. "We have a new competition going on this year where the top three children who read the most books for the months of June and July get to take home a 'One World, Many Stories' yard sign to show off their accomplishment. The signs state "A Webster Parish Library Top Reader Lives Here!"
"This year we are also able to sell T-shirts and book bags again, so they will be going on sale on May 23. Calendars are already out at the Library and we encourage everyone to stop by and pick one up. We hope to see everyone this summer."
