"But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone wants to sue you, and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. And whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you." Matthew 5:39b-42 NASB
Jesus gives four examples about how the righteous person should react, not with retaliation and vengeance but in love, grace, and mercy. To turn the other cheek and not to return an insult for a humiliating insult was to show patience. To give a person who has wronged you your coat was to go beyond the normal demands to show love. To go two miles when the Roman soldier could only legally demand one mile was to show a willingness to serve others. To give was an act of generosity and kindness.
Lord Jesus, help me to show Your love when others do me harm. Let my life be a constant witness of Your saving grace.
