Mark your calendars

System dropping half-day registration

Webster Parish schools are omitting a half-day of school this year and parents may need to mark their calendars.

In the past, school registration happened on the first day of school, which was a half-day.

"However, that day did not count as an instructional day," said Morris Busby, Webster Parish School Board Secondary supervisor. "It was really becoming useless, because that day did not count as an instructional day, we were running buses, which was costing money and repeating instructions and directions to students who didn't show up on the half day."

Busby said student records were physically moved in the past and technology has made that practice obsolete.

"Computer systems allow for student records to move electronically from school to school with the student," he said. "The half day was helpful in the past because student records had to be moved from one building or location to another.

"The half-day was also helpful because it allowed time for paperwork," he continued. "We still have to have new enrollment cards for each student each year, because the state requires us to. Sometimes student information changes, and we need to update the records."

Busby said parents of children who attended Webster Parish schools last year will need to fill out paperwork, but their students are already registered. Parents of students entering the Webster School system for the first time or reentering after leaving will need to register at schools between July 30 and August 10.

Parents wanting to have registration forms before the first day of school may pick up the paperwork at Back to School Bashes in Minden and Springhill.

"Because we will start the school year with a full day, we need students who are new to the parish to come in those first two weeks of August," Busby said. "If they wait until the first day of school, it will be hectic."

Busby suggested calling schools and speaking with secretaries to make sure someone will be available at the school to help register students.

Students will need a copy of their birth certificate, social security card, proof of residence (such as a utility bill) and shot records.

The Back to School Bash in Springhill will be held on Sunday, August 5 for residents in north Webster Parish. Students attending North Webster High School and North Webster Junior High will meet at North Webster High School.

A Back to School Bash for Brown Upper Elementary, Browning Lower Elementary, North Webster Upper Elementary and North Webster Lower Elementary will be held at the Community Action Building behind North Webster High School.

Minden's Back to School Bash will be held at the Minden Civic Center on Monday, August 6 for students who attend Minden schools, Central Elementary, Lakeside Jr./Sr. High and Doyline School.

Minden High School will hold orientation on August 3 for incoming freshmen and those transferring to Minden High.
