Hotties in hats give back

The Red Hat Hotties (the Red Hat Society of Minden) recently did what they do best: had some fun and gave back in the process.

Last week, the Red Hat Hotties met with officials at Camp Minden for a tour of the facility and to learn more about the Youth Challenge Program.

IMG_0160It's a program that accepts kids 16 to 18 years of age that have had no felonies, are drug-free and are drop-outs or at high risk for becoming drop-outs in order to turn their lives around and make them productive members of society.

Fifteen hundred youth go through the program each year in the state of Louisiana.

After hearing a presentation about YCP, Extreme Queen Mother Cybil Kelley of the Minden RHS donated a check totaling $145 to YCP Sgt. Major Don Hemphill, Deputy Director of the YCP at Camp Minden. The check will be used to purchase books for the new library at Camp Minden for the YCP cadets.

Last year, RHS made a donation to the library in the form of used books. YCP is looking for more used book donations for their library. Anyone who would like to donate should call Shawn Hatcher, Activities Director of the YCP at Camp Minden at 382-4116 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. "Last year, the ladies donated books," Hatcher said. "That really helped us out a lot, but we could always use more books of every age level for our cadets."

After the presentation and the donation, RHS ladies had lunch with several of the YCP cadets.

"This gives the kids a chance to talk to someone outside of the people at Camp Minden," Hatcher said. "It helps with their social skills, plus it's just something fun to do for those cadets who have earned it."

The Red Hat Society (RHS) is a social organization that was founded in 1998 for women approaching the age of 50 and beyond.

As of January, there are more than 70,000 members and almost 24,000 chapters in the United States and 25 other countries.

The Red Hat Society is the largest women's social group in the world.

Their purpose is social interaction among women and to encourage fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness. The goal is for members to bond as they travel through life together.
