Glenbrook School begins expansion

Glenbrook School will welcome new and returning students next year, as well as a new general activities building.

Glenbrook School Headmaster Darden Gladney recently announced plans to begin construction of a general activities building.

“We have needed a facility of this type for a long time,” Gladney said. “Now it will become a reality to serve our students of today and those yet to come.”

Gladney feels the new building and its features will benefit the school.

“With the addition of the removable stage and the seated general assembly area, we will better be able to accommodate various events such as awards day programs, our annual Veterans Day recognition, student plays and guest speakers,” he said. “I am sure many other types of usage will follow.”

Construction is set to begin June 1, 2011 and will be built on the site of the current tennis courts.

“[The building] will include a cafeteria kitchen and dining area, as well as a regulation basketball court,” Gladney said. “The design calls for spacious restroom facilities which will be accessible from the interior of the building during the teaching day, as well as from the exterior when outdoor activities such as ball games are being held.”

The facility will also have a concession area that will accommodate outdoor activities. The heated and cooled facility will be audio-visual ready and include a removable stage.

“We have recognized a need for this type building for several years,” Gladney said.  “It will afford our younger students a place to play at recess during inclement weather, room for our danceline and cheerleaders to work after school, as well as a much-needed additional court for our basketball teams to practice.”
