Apaches survive against Rebels

HOMER—The Glenbrook Apaches took part in the Claiborne Double Header Thursday night at Claiborne Academy and beat Riverdale, 58-53.

Glenbrook trailed 26-25 at the half, and then built a 45-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Apaches then withstood a Rebel fourth-quarter comeback attempt to get the win.

"I want to start off by saying that I could not be more proud of our team," Glenbrook head coach Chris Kourvelous said. "They played wonderful team basketball. Adversity struck us hard this week and during the game. We were short two players (Austin Palmier and Caydan Maloney) both out due to injuries and late in the game Riverdale put an incredible run on us in the last couple of minutes and cut our lead from 11 points to one."

Kourvelous was happy with the way his team leaned on each other in the tough times.

"When things got tough, the guys encouraged one another and asked others to step up," he said. "Which they did and they did not argue or point fingers at one another when we were faced with adversity."

Zach Specht turned in another double-double and led Glenbrook with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Wesley Hicks, in his first game, also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Cade Spurlock scored 15 and had nine boards and Cory Walker scored six points. Jacob White had six points and seven rebounds and Bennett Kitchens scored two.

"Specht and Spurlock played very well," Kourvelous said. "And Wesley played a great game. Now, we must build upon what we are doing and keep moving forward. Plus we need to get everyone healthy."

The Apaches will face Central School today at 5:30 p.m. to complete the Claiborne Double Header Series.
