Because of lack of trust in God and a rebellious spirit towards Him, the Israelites had wandered forty years in the wilderness. They were now once again on the borders of the Promised Land. Moses was dead. Joshua, his long time faithful companion, was commissioned of God "now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel" Joshua 1:2.
The task was a daunting one but accompanied by promises of God's presence and success. Imagine Joshua listening to the Lord. "I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest" verses 5-9.
We also are on the borders of the Promised Land and, as Joshua, we as Christians have been commissioned to lead others to that wonderful destination (Matthew 28:19, 20). God's words to Joshua apply to us. Three times the same message is repeated, "be strong and of a good courage". Though Joshua had shown himself courageous, there would be many more trials to test his courage. So it will be for us. We must hang on in the strength of the Lord. We're told "he that endureth to the end shall be saved" Matthew 10:22. Enduring is what takes courage.
Also included in God's words is another needed ingredient for our success in Him. "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein."
Joshua was faithful to God's commission. If you/we are faithful "then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." Onward to the Promised Land!
