Minden High/Lakeside jamboree

Crimson Tide, Lady Tiders take pre-season wins

The Minden High and Lakeside basketball teams gathered at the Palace at Minden High for a pre-season basketball jamboree Thursday night.

Both the Crimson Tide and Lady Tiders came out on top with the Tide winning 45-21 and the Lady Tiders taking a 25-21 win.

"It was kind of the typical jamboree," Crimson Tide coach Alan Shaw said. "The kids came out real excited to play in front of a crowd for the first time. There were a lot of mistakes early, some nervousness, turnovers and a lot of missed easy shots."

But Shaw said once the teams got into the flow of the game and settled down, the play improved.

"Once we got into the rhythm we looked a lot better," he said. "Our defense was good all night and we finally started getting some easy baskets of fast breaks and got some easy shots and started to look a lot better."

Lakeside head coach Jason Gould wasn't quite as pleased with his team's start.

"It was kind of a rough start of the season for us," he said. "We knew Minden would be pretty tough on us. We're just starting the season with so many young people. It's just going to be the first of several growing pains for us early in the season."

Jamarion Teal led the Warriors with 10 points and Davian Whiting scored seven.

C.J. Elkins led Minden with nine, Anfernee Redd scored nine and Damario Hill scored six.

"We played 15 kids and 11 scored," Shaw said. "I think that was good for a 20 minute game. That showed our depth and balance."

The Lady Tiders led early, fell behind and then came back for the win.

"I thought we did a good job early on defense," Lady Tider coach Jacob Brown said. "We led 15-4 and then Lakeside went on a run. We did a good job of battling through their run, and then we made some plays to retake the lead."

Carmella Specks led the Lady Tiders with nine points and four rebounds and Shabrie Nelson added four points and nine rebounds.

"I think our bright spot was how well our defense played," Brown said. "We defended well and got into our transition game. But we have to be more consistant with our defense over the whole game. But I'm excited about where we're headed this season."

Minden will play at Homer on Monday, and Lakeside heads to Haughton a week from Saturday.
