"Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord.' But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, . . . Nor shall you make an oath by your head . . ." Matthew 5:33-36 NASB
Jesus gives the fourth of His contrasting statements dealing with righteousness that goes beyond action to attitude and character. The ancient law stated that vows made to the Lord were binding and must be kept.
The people had corrupted the concept of vows and promises by making an oath that sounded good, but they had no intention of fulfilling it. When they promised by heaven or earth or even swore an oath by their own head, they could break that vow because it was not a vow to God. Jesus stated that such lack of integrity showed a lack of righteous character.
Lord Jesus, I desire to be a person of integrity. Help me to deal with others in a way that would bring honor and glory to Your Great Name.
