"And if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." Matthew 5:29 NASB
Jesus illustrates His contrasting statement concerning lust and adultery by describing how serious sin is to the righteous person. The attitudes and emotions that motivate one's actions need radical discipline in order to be controlled.
Jesus uses exaggerated and figurative speech to teach that extreme and drastic measures must be taken to avoid temptations especially those relating to sexual sins. The tearing out of the eye and cutting off of the hand (verse 30) symbolize the exaggerated extreme measures needed to avoid what causes one to sin.
Lord Jesus, help me to flee from situations where I will be tempted to sin. Every sin is serious and damaging to my desire to live a holy and pure life that glorifies You.
