Happy Thanksgiving

Ways To Show That You Are Thankful Today

As you sit down today for Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family, it is important to remember everything for which we as Americans have to be thankful.

The freedom to worship as we please.

The freedom to express ourselves and speak out in favor or against issues facing the nation.

 The freedom to bear arms.

The freedom to be industrious and make our way to a prosperous future.

n And every other freedom provided to the citizens of the world's wealthiest and most well equipped nation on Earth.

However, it is also important to be thankful for having the monetary and material items that some others do not, including some Americans we see every day.

While it is true every person has the ability and right to make a name for themselves and to grow rich in America's free enterprise system, some are not as fortunate in this country.

While you are carving a Thanksgiving turkey and enjoying the annual Dallas Cowboys football game, others will be huddled under overpasses trying to keep warm and digging through garbage cans to find their own holiday meal.

It is a sad fact, but unfortunately, it is true.

Don't forget these people on Thanksgiving, and remember that you can help.

Drop in at your church or a shelter with some holiday food or offer to help. It is possible to brighten someone's day with just a smile, a nod and showing that you care.

You could also make a contribution to a local group such as UCAP or help with the annual Civitan Santa campaign. More on these programs will be included in upcoming issues of the paper.

Remember that it doesn't always have to be much to make a difference. A prayer for those in need could go a long way.

Helping those less fortunate as we celebrate our blessings and our relationships with loved ones can and does do a lot for the Americans among us who have much less reason to give thanks.

So here's a happy Thanksgiving to all, including the thousands and thousands of those less fortunate that some of us try to pretend do not exist.

They need our help today, on Thanksgiving, and every day.

Thanksgiving is a good time to start showing we care.
