Two Webster Parish teams advance

Webster Parish started out with six playoff teams in the LHSAA baseball playoffs, and after the first round, two remain.

Lakeside and Shongaloo won their first round games last week and will advance to the regional round beginning Tuesday.

Lakeside will play at Sterlington High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and Shongaloo will play at Florien.

Minden, Sarepta, Doyline and Springhill all lost in the first round. The Tide fell 10-5 to Haughton last Thursday, and Sarepta and Doyline were both shut out 10-0 by Hanson Memorial and Forest. Springhill lost a heart-breaker to Opelousas Catholic, 8-7.

Shongaloo 13, Holden 3

The Shongaloo Tigers hosted the Holden Rockets on Friday, and pounded their guest, 13-3.

The game was close until the fifth inning, when the Tigers scored eight runs to break the game open.

JaVonte Thomas took the win for the Tigers, who improved to 19-7.

Thomas was a hit at the plate as well, as he went three-for-four with a double and Jacob Edwards went four-for-four. McCaul Lacobee had a triple and a single, and Nick Roath and James Sapp both had two hits. Tyler Zachary added a triple.

The Tigers will play at Florien at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Opelousas Catholic 8, Springhill 7

Springhill fell behind 2-0 early in the game, but exploded for six runs in the sixth inning,  and eventually lead 7-2 lead.

But the Vikings fought back and came back to tie it in the seventh, and then won it on a passed ball to take the 8-7 win.
