Carter Federal Credit Union (Carter Federal) was named the Springhill-North Webster Chamber of Commerce Featured Business of the Month for February. Built on the philosophy of "People Helping People", Carter Federal has been serving its members since 1954.
The credit union has been a long-time active member of the Chamber, and is very involved in supporting community activities and events, especially those promoting economic opportunity and financial well-being.
The Springhill-North Webster Chamber of Commerce recognized Carter Federal's contributions to the community by honoring it with the 2012 Business of the Year Award.
Because Carter Federal is a cooperative, not-for-profit organization owned by its members, they are committed to the mission of promoting financial well-being.
One of the ways they achieve this mission is to offer relevant benefits and services. Financial education and financial counseling are among the free services offered by Carter Federal.
"We believe that education is a key component to financial success," explains James Gibson, President/CEO of the credit union.
Most recently Carter Federal partnered with the IRS to open a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program in their Community Center at 203 S. Main Street.
This new program provides taxpayers who earn $51,000 or less free income tax preparation services and e-filing of their returns. Carter Federal also established an interest-free Refund Anticipation Loan to help taxpayers get their refunds fast and easy.
In the past month, over 120 taxpayers have taken advantage of Carter Federal's free tax preparation service. Financial Education training is also being offered to anyone who files their tax returns at the VITA site free of charge.
No appointments are necessary and the hours are Wednesday through Friday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information contact the VITA Program Manager, Gary Chumbley at 318-382-8400 Ext. 1179.
