YEA! Owen emerges as artist

Young artists will have an opportunity to exhibit their work thanks to a new program at Cultural Crossroads.

The first Young Emerging Artist (YEA) to hold a show is Cam Owen, the first YEA recipient. His show will be held Thursday December 6 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.

"This will be his first one-man show," Cultural Crossroads director Chris Broussard said. "We are especially thrilled to have his show in the newly-constructed Zenobia's House."

Zenobia's House, a 900 square foot studio on the four-acre Farm of Cultural Crossroads, was built with foundation funds from Beaird Foundation and an anonymous donor.

"Cam's show will be the first time Zenobia's will be open to the public," Broussard said. "In addition to Cam's supporters, and friends of Cultural Crossroads at this event, we hope to see new faces and supporters of the arts at his show."

Broussard may be especially proud of Owen's achievement.

"I first started drawing and painting when I attended The Children's Center when I was eight years old," Owen said. "My art instructor was Ms. Chris (Broussard)."

Broussard taught Owen how to bring out his creative side with paints and pastels.

"I always had a desire to draw and create art all throughout high school and college," Owen said. "Art was an escape for me. It really helped me deal with a lot of different issues I went through in my life.

"It took my mind off the negativeness and brought out something on paper that made me happy," he continued. "Art has been a huge influence in my life and will continue to be in the future."

Owen's work is largely comprised of abstract works in oil pastels with bright vivid colors.

He has experience in many other creative areas including theater, and he will use his talents and experience to lead Cultural Crossroads' new Young Emerging Artist program.

"Anything I can do to help promote art and support young artists, like I have been helped and supported – that's something I want to do," he said. "I can't wait to see what our young people have to offer, and do my part to promote them."
