Toy drive under way

Local good Samaritans are gearing up for the traditional "Civitan Santa" toy drive, and they need Minden's help.

The annual Christmas Toy Program "Civitan Santa," jointly sponsored by the Minden Civitan Club and the Young Woman's Service Club, is seeking donations to make 2012 a happy holiday for local children.

"Last year this program provided toys for almost 700 children in over 200 families in the area," toy chairman Ed LaBruyere said. "We were able to run this program due to the generosity of local businesses and individuals who donated money plus hundreds of dollars worth of new toys for the children."

Each year the local Civitan Club with the help of the Young Woman's Service Club collects and distributes toys to needy children in the Minden/South Webster Parish area. Members of the Minden City Police Department and the Webster Parish Sheriff's Department will deliver the toys just before Christmas.

"We try to provide at least one new toy for each of the children who have nothing," LaBruyere said. "It is only with your generous contributions that this program can provide this wonderful service for our local children."

Donated new toys may be delivered to the Minden police or fire stations and cash donations may be sent to the Minden Civitan Club, P.O. Box 95, Minden, LA 71058. Checks should be made out to the Civitan International Fund, Federal ID #23-7407941.

Contributions may also be given to any member of the Civitans or Young Women's Service Club.

Application forms may be picked up at the Minden City Police Department, the Minden fire stations, Webster Community Action offices or the local UCAP office. Applications will be considered for children through age 13.

In order to have all of the toys delivered by Christmas all applications for assistance must be in the hands of the sponsors by Dec. 14th.

"We ask that you please consider us again this year," LaBruyere said. "Without your help several hundred children will think no one cares."
