Creator, Sustainer, Savior

The gospel of John was written "that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name" John 20:31. In keeping with this aim, the book begins by declaring Jesus to be the creative "Word". "And the Word was God. . . All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made" John 1:1, 3. Paul states "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. Yes, it was through Jesus that all things were created, but though many acknowledge that fact, His role as Sustainer is oftgn overlooked.

We read in Hebrews 1:1-3 "God . . . hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power." Take note that Jesus upholds all by "the word of His power". The Word Creates and the Word upholds.

Both sinners and saints are sustained whether or not they acknowledge God. That's a thought worthy of our consideration. Truly, "in him we live, and move, and have our being" Acts 17:28.

This world was not created and then left on its own. The planets in their orbits are maintained by God. Every breath we breathe, every heartbeat, every bite of food, are ours because of His sustaining power. He and His Father are in this work together, personally involved in our lives. Matthew 6:28, 30 attest to that. "Consider the lilies of the field . . . if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?" But here is the bind-boggling truth, the same hand that created all things and sustains all things, from the smallest forms of life to the worlds in space, is the hand that was nailed to the cross for us! Amazing grace! Amazing love!
