The fire that kept burning

The television announcer recently posed the question "Do you know what to do when you find your house is on fire?" As he launched into his explicit instructions my mind went back to the time I found my house on fire.

The date was October 20, 1959. My husband, J. C., observed his 41st birthday that day. I had planned his favorite meal - broiled T-bone steaks, French fries, green salad, French bread, chocolate cake and ice cream. The cake was done, iced and decorated. The steaks had marinated and were ready to broil when he came in from work.
