Krewe is featured business

krewebommarch2013

The Springhill-North Webster Chamber of Commerce has chosen the Krewe of Artemis-Springhill as the featured business of the month for March.

The Krewe of Artemis-Springhill was started in the summer of 2002 when five people were sitting around dreaming of how to bring Mardi Gras to the Springhill area. There has been a Springhill Main Street Mardi Gras Parade since 2000 and this small group was looking for ideas to increase publicity and spark interest in the community. They took their thoughts to the volunteers who had worked on the parade and the rest is history.

Artemis, who in Greek mythology is the protector of the woodlands and the hunt, was chosen for the name, since Springhill and surrounding regions have always depended heavily on woodland industries and hunting is a major pastime.

The Mardi Gras Krewe of Artemis - Springhill has grown from few to many. At the end of this carnival season, Artemis boasted a membership of well over one hundred!

This diverse membership consists of married couples, single men and women, parents, grandparents, homemakers and professionals.

These ambassadors live in Springhill, Cullen, Taylor, Magnolia, Shongaloo, Sarepta, Minden, Cotton Valley, Ruston, Lake Erling, Benton, Lafayette and Shreveport.

These krewe has two parade floats for adults and one for children and grandchildren of Artemis members. Krewe members help charitable causes, visit schools, assist with fundraisers, produce Coronations and Grand Bals and serve as diplomats wherever they go.

The Krewe of Artemis-Springhill is open to the public and is now recruiting members during its annual membership drive. Artemis meets the first Thursday of each month in the Artemis Den, 25 Bice Street, Springhill, Louisiana, at 7 p.m.

The dues are $40 a year per person and one must be 18 years old to join. The coronation that will introduce this year's royalty will be held at the CAC building on September 7 and the Grand Bal will take place January 25, 2014 at the Civic Center.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting the 2013-2014 Captain Eric Simmons, 547-3104.

Membership applications may be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce, 400 North Giles, Springhill.
