Visitors to the area will have access to knowledgeable hospitality workers after local employees were given a tour of what Minden has to offer.
The tour, which was given last week, was offered by Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau, Minden Main Street and Travel Host Magazine.
"It was an outstandingly beautiful day and perfect for the first Spring Hospitality Tour," said Lynn Dorsey, Director for Webster Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The tour was given in effort to provide staff of the hotel properties in Minden the opportunity to experience Minden as a visitor.
"We want people who directly interact with visitors – our hotel employees – to know of the wonderful things we have to offer," Dorsey said. "We have so much to be proud of in this historic community."
The tour enabled participants to visit and experience the animated and interactive Dorcheat Museum, which is free to the public.
"We also stopped by a few of our wonderful downtown shops, the beautiful historic residential district and made note of things we too often take for granted," she said. "We appreciate the hotel management that allowed their staff to attend.
"New friends were made and new working relationships were developed," Dorsey continued. "We are all on the same team – promoting our community and encouraging our visitors to spend money with our retail merchants, eat in our restaurants and ultimately generate more revenue for the people of Webster Parish."
Darlene Phillips, general manager at Holiday Inn Express, made it "mandatory" for all her staff to attend.
"For my staff to have the opportunity to learn about what the area has to offer is great," Phillips said. "This is going to help my front desk staff visit and engage visitors and promote the area, which is good for hotels and other businesses."
Shirley West, front desk clerk at Best Western said she was unaware of several things she learned about on the tour.
"I had no idea we had a museum," she said. "And it's free – that is really cool. Every place we stopped at was really nice. Now that I know about these things, I will definitely tell our customers about these places."
Karla Kearns, who is a front desk clerk at Holiday Inn Express, shared West's thoughts.
"The tour was fun and I learned a lot," Kearns said. "I'm not from here so I found it really interesting. I think guests at our hotel will find these things interesting, too."
Jesse Preston, manager of Exacta Inn, said the tour was very informative.
"I learned a lot," she said "I hope to go on another tour during the winter so I can be more knowledgeable about what the area has to offer during other seasons."
Preston, who is from Bossier City, said the tour offered more than visiting locations. It also promoted the history and culture of Minden. She said she feels tours like the one she took are important to economic growth.
"The more information we (hotels) get, the better it is for everyone," Jesse said. "When things like the Spring Tour are offered, it helps all the way around. It helps the hotel get more people and it helps local business and attractions because word of mouth gets out."
