Fund raising tourney heads into 12th year
Early next month, on Saturday, August 4, a group of family and friends will get together to host the 12th Annual Sonny Rose Softball Tournament.
The tournament was started by friends of Rose who died in a car accident more than 10 years ago.
"Billy Reeve got this tournament started the first year, on the one field, at Victory Park with a handful of teams," Casey Rose, Sonny's brother said. "The last couple of years, at the Minden Recreation Complex, we had 23 teams playing on four fields. My family and I never dreamed that it would turn into this large of an event, that players and fans look forward to every year. I want to thank all of the teams and players for their continued support."
In addition to being a way to remember Rose, the tournament also has been a platform for raising money for various charities.
"For the past 11 years we have raised thousands of dollars for various charities in my brother's name," Casey Rose said. "This year the proceeds of the tournament will go to The Blake McKay Fight For Life Foundation. There is no better feeling than to help provide moments of peace and happiness for a terminally ill child."
The Blake McKay Fight for Life Foundation assists children and their families, who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness by alleviating mental, physical or financial distress that resulted from the life threatening condition.
