Educator Issues Community Plea

Dear Editor

My name is Kim Hammett. I am a paraprofessional at Lakeside High School. I have been with these same students since they were in the 5th grade; they are now in the 11th grade.

The whole class is very special to me. When these three students JeCorey Lathan, Aubrey Miles, and Michael Stephens showed me their letters from DownUnder Sports, I was extremely proud for them.

Their response to me was, "Mrs. Hammett we will never be able to go, it cost way too much."  At that moment I got on the phone to find out if the company was a legitimate organization and how much it was going to cost, which will be $5,000.00 each.

I told the guys that I would help them and with the Lord's help we could do it!

These guys have been at every fundraiser, they have sold t-shirts, stood at the traffic light in Sibley asking for donations, and have gone door to door asking businesses for donations. We have also, had hot dog sales, rummage sales, a raffle, a car wash. We will still need to continue raising money.

The reason I'm writing this letter is to ask for the help of this community. This is a once in a life time opportunity for these students to go to Australia and be able to compete in the "Mini International Olympics," in Track and Field. We have a portion of the money, but still need more. I would hate for these students not to be able to go because of lack of money.

They have already sent off for their passports and should be receiving them at any time. Their balance is due June 1, 2011. If you feel the desire or need to help these guys with a donation, Regions Bank has their account. They are called The Down Under Boys of Louisiana. You can also mail any donations to Down Under Boys to 368 Bossier Street, Heflin, La. 71039, or feel free to call me at 318-426-4687. With your support and the help of God we can make this happen. We pray that God touches your heart in our favor. I want to thank you in advance for your support, and may God continue to bless you as you bless others.
