I just had occasion to follow a very special adoption process. The adopting family came from far away. Though, from the time of learning of the baby, there were only a very few short weeks until delivery, they did everything in their power to have all in readiness – arranged for and had the needed home study done by a social worker, assured the infant safety status of the house, prepared the nursery, made necessary arrangements for time off work, booked flights, and the adopting mother even learned how to cause herself to lactate so as to provide the best possible nutrition for the anticipated infant! They were present at the time of delivery and I can assure you that when the adopting couple was in possession of the precious newborn, you could see their faces glow with joy.
There is Someone else who came a very long distance to effect an adoption. "When the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son. . . To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father" Galatians 4:4-6. His was a thorough preparation in order to successfully care for every one of us who are willing to join His family. We are told "my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" Philippians 4:19. He even starts us out on the most nutritious milk. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" 1 Peter 2:2.
Unlike earthly parents desiring to adopt, our heavenly Father has known from times eternal that He wanted to adopt each of us and therefore made full provision to accomplish that goal.
"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will." Ephesians 1:4, 5. Only our free will refusal can interfere with His plan. (See Matthew 23:37, Joshua 24:15)
We are not yet in the home of our adopting Father, but based on His Word, it should be soon. "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" John 14:2, 3. And in that day, His face will glow as He "joy(s) over thee with singing" Zephaniah 3:17.
