MLK Birthday Celebration

Each year, the nation pauses to commemorate the life and legacy of an international hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The official holiday for this celebration is the third Monday in January each year. The 2013 local observance will be the 26th Annual Celebration for the City of Minden. The theme for this milestone Celebration is "Living United: One Dream, One Purpose."

Activities for the 26th Annual Celebration Include:

Saturday January 19: 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT, 10 a.m., Minden Rec Complex Gym High Gym; Elementary, Jr. High, Sr. High Girls and Boys Teams as well as Young Adult Teams will compete.

MLK ORATORICAL CONTEST, 5 p.m. at the Minden Civic Center.

Sunday, January 20: MLK COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE, 3 p.m. at the Minden Civic Center. MLK Youth Leadership Ward and Oratorical Contest Winners will be presented.

Monday, January 21: MINISTER'S ECUMENICAL MARCH, 8 a.m. on MLK Drive; Area Ministers will march, sing and pray honoring the ministerial efforts of Dr. King.

MLK PARADE, 10 a.m. downtown Minden (with competition for best decorated float, best band performance, and most spirited group/organization

YOUTH RALLY, immediately following Parade at the Minden Civic Center; The Winners of the Parade Contest, Essay and Poster Contest Winners will be announced.

MLK Celebration Commemorative T-Shirts, Sweatshirts and Ribbons are available.

All citizens of Minden, black and white, all denominations, faith based organizations, civic and social group and businesses, are invited and encouraged to participate and re-commit our community to the ideals of Dr. King.

Holiday Closures

All local banks will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day Monday, January 21 with the exception of the Walmart branch of Gibsland Bank & Trust.

Minden City Hall, the Webster Parish Courthouse and the Webster Parish School Board office will be closed, and schools will not be in session. All branches of the Webster Parish Library will be open. There will be no mail delivery Monday, and the U.S. Post Office will be closed. Garbage pick-up inside the city limits will run as usual.
