HILTON HEAD. S.C. —Glenbrook tennis coach Wayne Orr and his Bossier/Shreveport 4.0 Super Senior Men's tennis team recently represented Louisiana in the USTA Sectional Championships held at the Shipyard Tennis complex in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The state winners from the nine Southern states are placed into two divisions. On an alternating basis from year-to-year, one state is granted two teams, making two divisions of five teams. The teams compete in a round-robin format within each division; then the division winners compete for the Sectional Championship. The winner advances to the National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, in April 2012.
In addition to Orr, team members included team captain Jay Boyd, Alan Cox, Ken Jantz, Mike White, Bob Lettow, Hulen Rodriguez (Nachitoches), Tommy Poljak, and Rich Holland.
Louisiana was undefeated in round-robin competition, winning each of its matches by scores of 2-1. Each match consists of three doubles' matches, as a team attempts to win two of the three. Louisiana defeated teams from Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi (B), and Arkansas. In the other division were teams from Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi (A).
Tennessee won the Group I division; Louisiana won the Group II division. The finals matched two undefeated teams. Tennessee won the match-up on Court 1; Louisiana won the match-up on Court 2. The match-up on Court 3 decided the championship; Louisiana lost in a third set tie-break, scores of 5-7, 7-6, 10-6.
Orr noted, "Hilton Head is a beautiful location for tennis. We had only seven players who were physically able to compete, but during each of the matches, there was one team who would win and would be the deciding point for the match. We did not win the Sectional title, but we are certainly a group of winners. THe camaraderie led to encouragement of team members as the completion of one match allowed team members to cheer for those members still on the courts.
