Golfers will tee it up for charity

Since its inception in 2004, the Minden Charity Golf Classic has distributed more than $205,000 to 140 families in need.

This year’s event  marks the eighth annual fund-raising effort that will aid families experiencing everything from house fires to catastrophic illnesses.

“The dates for this year’s event will be June 3 through 5,” said Minden Charity President Mike Harper. “Our schedule will be the same as last year. All social events are scheduled for Friday night and will include dinner, auction and a dance with Hard Times. There will be no social activity on Saturday night.”

Golf  will be played at The Grove Golf Course on both days, and the social event held at Pine Hills Country Club.

“We had a full field of sponsor-only teams last year and anticipate the same this year,” Harper said. “In short,  participation, generosity and support are making a positive and immediate difference in our community, and you all have the continued gratitude from each family we’ve helped over the years.”

All tournament information can be accessed from the Minden Charity link at the MBL Bank web site “mblminden.com.

The goal of this nonprofit organization is to maintain a fund to provide charitable assistance, within the Minden area, primarily for those needs not specifically met by existing charities.  Some examples would be assisting a family that has suffered a house  fire, or assisting a family stricken with a devastating illness that creates a financial  hardship.

“Monies are distributed by application only, and we do not advertise, but rather seek input from ministers, principals and social workers regarding families in need,” Harper said. “Decisions regarding disbursements are made by a board of not less than five persons.”

Current members of this board are:  David Botzong, Jill Chanler, John Collins, Robin Fish, Mike Harper, Cynthia Payne, Mike Spillers, Robbie Wilson, Mike Wise and Mike Woodard.
