Mayor recall on 4/6 ballot

TillmanHeflin mayor Judy Tillman is facing possible recall in the April 6 election.

"This is the result of a second recall petition," Webster Parish Clerk of Court Holli Vining said. "The first petition was struck down in court."

The first petition reportedly contained 69 signatures of 165 registered Heflin voters – three more than the 40 percent required.

26th Judicial District Court Judge John Robinson ordered six names stricken from the first petition to recall Tillman after the governor's office issued a proclamation for a recall election in July.

However, the Heflin Board of Aldermen voted to pay for Tillman's petition to nullify the recall petition at an August meeting.

The most recent recall petition has 78 signatures and only 62 are required, according to the proclamation.

Webster Parish Registrar of Voters Melanie Smith said voters at opposite ends of the parish are the only ones involved in the upcoming election.

Precinct 38 voters in Helfin will vote on Tillman's recall, while voters in Sarepta Precinct 8 are facing five propositions involving the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Proposition 1: Shall the sale of beverages of alcoholic content containing not more than six percent alcohol by volume be permitted by package only and not for conumption on the premises in the Town of Sarepta?

Proposition 2: Shall the sale of beverages of alcoholic content containing not more than six percent alcohol by volume for consumption on the premises be permitted in the Town of Sarepta?

Proposition 3: Shall the sale of beverage alcohol containing one-half of one percent alcohol by volume and above for consumption on the premises be permitted in the Town of Sarepta?

Proposition 4: Shall the sale of beverage alcohol containing one-half of one percent alcohol by volume and above be permitted by package only and not for consumption on the premises in the Town of Sarepta?

Proposition 5: Shall the sale of beverages of high and low alcoholic content be permitted only on the premises of restaurant establishments which have been issued a "R" permit as defined by law in the Town of Sarepta?

Early voting election began Saturday at the Webster Parish Registrar of Voters Office at the courthouse and continues through March 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, excluding Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
