Tupelo takes Mid-South Legion Title
After a busy weekend, the Tupelo (MS) American Legion team took the championship of the Mid-South Regional Tournament at Griffith Stadium.
Tupelo will now join seven other regional winners in Shelby, North Carolina to take part in the American Legion World Series that will be played starting August 12 and will be shown on ESPN3.
Tupelo defeated Columbia (MO), 20-9 in last night's championship game.
Starter Ben Hudspeth took the win for Tupelo despite surrendering eight earned runs over five innings. Brandon Woodruff pitched the final three innings, giving up just one unearned run. Both pitchers combined to strike out eight batters.
The Tupelo offense carried the day as they scored in seven of the eight innings.
Drew Alford led Tupelo with a homer and five RBIs and Will Cox went three-for-five with a pair of home runs. William Goss (3/6) and Woodruff (2/4) also homered. Tyler Moore and Channing Nanney each added four hits each. Connor Carothers, Cody Shrewsbury and Kirk Roberts all added base hits.
Brandon Compton went four-for-four with a home run and four RBIs to lead Columbia.
In the first game Monday night, Columbia reached the title game with a 5-2 win over Texarkana (AR).
Zack Walton pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run while scattering eight hits and striking out six.
Brandon Compton led Columbia as he went two-for-four with a home run. Derrick Armstrong and Nick Holt each had two hits and a RBI, and Seth Staggs added a double.
Daniel Spears and Blake Resecker each had two hits to lead Texarkana. Josey Langston, Carlton Bailey, Alan Copeland and Will Powell added base hits.
