Minden team eliminated over the weekend

The Minden American Legion team was eliminated from the Mid-South Regional Tournament this weekend with a pair of losses.

Minden fell to Tupelo, Mississippi, 20-5 on Friday and then lost 6-2 at the hands of Texarkana, Arkansas on Saturday.

In Friday's loss, Tupelo jumped on Minden for five runs in the top of the first inning, but the Minden boys fought back with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Reco Mitchell drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded-single, and Preston Gray also had a RBI.

But that was as close as Minden would get, as Tupelo scored 15 runs over the last six innings to take the 20-5 win.

Kirby Moore led Minden with a three-for-four day at the plate, driving in a run. Mitchell and Gray both drove in two runs and added a base hit a piece.Matt Warren singled and doubled and Tyler Wallace and Kevin Ginn both added singles.

Dewey Kendrick, the first of six Minden pitchers, took the loss and dropped to 0-1 in the tournament. Rudi Spurlock was the most efficient of the Minden pitchers as he went the pitched the final 3 2/3 allowing just three earned runs while striking out three.

Saturday's game looked to be a copy of the night before, as Minden gave up four runs in the first inning. But Minden calmed down and played even the rest of the way through, but it wasn't enough as they fell 6-2 to Texarkana.

Minden failed to score in the top of the first, but Texarkana posted a four-spot in the bottom of the inning off Minden starter Preston Gray.

In the bottom of the second, Bo Parker came in to pitch for Minden, and limited Texarkana to just one earned run s on five hits over the final seven innings.

But the Minden bats also were having trouble scoring runs off Texarkana's Ethan Hammond. Hammond limited Minden to just two runs (one earned) and five hits over nine innings. He struck out nine Minden batters along the way.

Minden scored their first run in the top of the fifth inning when Tyler Wallace walked, moved to third and scored on a passed ball. They added their other run in the seventh, on a Dewey Kendrick solo home run to right center.

In addition to Kendrick's home run, Moore, Warren, Parker and Mitchell all added singles.
