Seven state tournament under way in Minden

The best teams across a seven state region are in Minden for the next few days to participate in a grand summer baseball tournament.

The first pitch of the Mid-South American Legion Regional Tournament was tossed out this morning around 9:30 at Griffith Stadium with games set to last all day, into the night and through the weekend.

With the state champions of seven states in town, along with our hometown American Legion team, it's easy to see why this tournament is being hailed as the biggest American Legion baseball event in Minden's history.

"Minden and American Legion Post 74 are honored to have been selected as host of the Regional American Legion Tournament here in Minden," said Roy Kirkham, baseball chairman for Post 74.

The local American Legion team, filled with local players and local coaching, will take the field this evening. Specific game time is not set, but the game will follow a 4:30 tilt between the Kansas state champion and the Louisiana state champion.

Game time will likely be around 6:30.

The tournament will feature the champions of seven states including Louisiana, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and the host Minden team.

Games began this morning with a double header. Two more games will be played this afternoon.

The same format will be followed on Friday. On Saturday, a game will be held at noon followed by a game a 4 p.m. and another immediately afterward.

Sunday games will be played at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

A championship game will be played on Monday at 2 p.m. unless tournament results dictate a 15th and final game, which would be played at 7 p.m.

The winner of the tournament will advance to North Carolina to play in the American Legion World Series, which will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Tickets are readily available to see each game in the tournament; however, it might be more advantageous to tournament-goers to buy one pass for all games.

Rather than buying tickets for each game individually, a Tournament Pass can be purchased for only $30.

The pass is good for all 14 games. In addition, there remains plenty of opportunities for local businesses to advertise during the tournament.

Inning announcements and sponsorships are still available as are game sponsorships.

"Sponsorship is a great opportunity for your company to obtain recognition as a good corporate neighbor and become associated with a very positive youth event that serves a very good cause – providing wholesome recreation and sports for our youth," Kirkham said.

Sponsorships also help defray the costs of hosting such an ambitious tournament. While all tournament workers are volunteers, Kirkham said hosting a quality regional tournament that will be a credit to the City of Minden and the American Legion is very costly.

"The American Legion Post 74 is required to bear significant associated expenses for motel rooms and transportation for the players and coaches, player's meals, insurance and umpires," he said.

For more information on donations, tickets or sponsorships, contact the local American Legion post at 318- 371-1603. Or go online at www.lalegion74.org.

All games will be played at Griffith Stadium.
